Who called me? Look up a debt collector's phone number

Type in the number that called or texted you. Our list holds 821 numbers from 160 debt collectors, lenders and other companies, and every one was checked against the company's own website, a regulator's records or a letter filed in court. Each result links to that source. The check runs on your device.

How we check every number

A number goes into our list only if we can show where it comes from. We accept three kinds of source:

  1. The company's own website, such as its contact page, payment page, state disclosures or a page listing the numbers it calls from.
  2. A regulator's records, such as a state or city debt collection licence that lists the company's phone number.
  3. A letter filed in court, where a collector's letter is attached to a lawsuit. We say so, because older letters can show numbers a company no longer uses.

We do not use caller-ID databases, user reports or other lookup sites, because they are often wrong or out of date. If we cannot confirm a number, we leave it out. Each result shows the source and the date we last checked it. More on how we check numbers.

If your number is not in our list

That does not mean the call is a scam. Collectors and lenders call from many numbers they never publish. It does mean you should check before you say anything about the debt or pay.

  • Do not call back the number in a voicemail or text. Find the company's number on its own website, or on a letter you already have, and call that.
  • Caller ID can be faked, so a familiar name on your screen proves nothing.
  • Ask for a written validation notice before paying. A real collector must send one.
  • Paste the message into our scam checker to look for the warning signs regulators describe.

If the number belongs to a company you owe

Knowing who is calling is only the first step. If it is a collector, you have the right to a written notice showing the creditor and the amount, and to dispute the debt in writing. Our deadline calculator works out how long you have, and our debt validation letter guide explains what to send.

If it is the original lender, such as a bank or card company, the federal debt collection rules mostly do not apply to it, but it still has to follow its own agreement with you and state law.

Common questions

How do I find out which debt collector called me?

Type the number into the lookup above. If it is not in our list, look up the company named in the call or voicemail on its own website, or wait for its written notice.

Are the numbers in this list verified?

Yes. Every number was checked against the company's own website, a regulator's records or a letter filed in court, and each result links to that source and shows when we checked it.

Why is a collector's number not listed?

Collectors call from many numbers they never publish. We only list numbers we can confirm from an official source, so a missing number is not proof of a scam.

Can a scammer use a real collector's number?

Yes. Caller ID can be faked, so check by calling the company back on a number from its own website.
