Credit Collection Services: an insurance bill or an accident claim?
Credit Collection Services (CCS) is a collection agency in Norwood, Massachusetts. Credit Collection Services is one of The CCS Companies, alongside CCS Commercial, Customer Contact Solutions and ClaimAssist, and says it has collected consumer payment obligations for over 60 years. Many people who hear from "CCS" are dealing with an insurance company, and what you owe depends on what kind of insurance claim it is.
The check is free and says plainly if a letter will not help. If it will, the letter and three follow-ups cost $29 ($19 for military, veterans, seniors and people with disabilities).

An unpaid premium or an accident claim?
Consumer sources report that CCS collects for insurers such as Progressive, Geico and Allstate, as well as utilities and medical laboratories. Two very different things can arrive with an insurer's name on them.
An unpaid premium. If a policy was canceled with money still owing, or a final bill after an audit or a mid-term change was never paid, that balance comes from a purchase of insurance for yourself. Federal debt collection law defines a debt as an obligation to pay money arising from a transaction for personal, family or household purposes, so the usual collection rules apply, including your right to dispute.
A claim after a car accident. Its sister company CCS Commercial runs a large subrogation operation, pursuing uninsured-motorist and third-party insurance claims, as well as business-to-business debts and fines. Here an insurer that paid for damage wants to recover it from the driver it says was at fault. That claim comes from an accident, not from something you bought, so it may fall outside the federal definition of a debt and the protections that come with it. Do not admit fault or agree to pay before reading the claim carefully, check whether your own insurer should handle it, and consider legal advice.
Checking an insurance balance
For a premium balance, ask the insurer for the cancellation notice, the dates of coverage and the final account statement, and compare them with what you paid. The validation notice must name the creditor and show how the balance changed since the itemization date. A common problem is being billed for coverage after you had already moved to another insurer: your new policy's start date is evidence.
Reading an accident claim letter
A subrogation demand usually names the insurer that paid, its own policyholder, the date and place of the accident, and an amount for repairs, rental cars or medical payments. Check each part:
- Were you insured that day? If so, send the demand to your own insurer straight away and ask whether your liability coverage applies.
- Is the accident yours? A wrong date, vehicle or driver is a reason to reply in writing that the claim is mistaken.
- Is the amount supported? Ask for the repair estimates, invoices and payment records behind the figure.
An insurer that is not paid can sue over a claim like this, so if the amount is large or you dispute fault, a short consultation with a lawyer is worth considering.
Is a call from "CCS Offices" real?
Its calls often show on caller ID as "CCS Offices". Its self-service payment site is at self-service.ccsusa.com. Type that address yourself rather than tapping a link in a text, or call 617-965-2000. Our free scam checker compares a message's links and numbers with CCS's published ones.
If the account is a medical bill, ask the provider for an itemized bill and about financial assistance first; our guide on how to negotiate medical bills walks through it, and explains whether medical bills affect your credit score.
Thinking about paying CCS? Read whether you should pay a collection agency first, because paying an old or unverified debt can backfire.
A worked example over Veterans Day
Say CCS mails a notice on Monday, November 8, 2027 about a $287.40 auto insurance premium balance.
- Veterans Day (November 11) and the weekend do not count, so the fifth working day after mailing is Tuesday, November 16, 2027.
- The dispute period can end no earlier than Thursday, December 16, 2027.
- Mail your dispute to Norwood with the start date of your new policy, asking for the cancellation notice and final statement.
