Buyer, agency or servicer?
The name on your letter is not always the company that owns the debt. A debt buyer has bought the account and is now the creditor. A collection agency collects for someone else, often the company you originally dealt with. A servicer collects for a buyer in the same corporate family.
It matters because your dispute goes to whoever is collecting, while the documents that prove the debt sit with whoever owns it. A validation notice has to name the current creditor, so start there.
