A text from Unifin? Check the number, then answer on paper

Unifin, Inc. calls itself a digital debt collection agency that collects on behalf of creditors as a third party. Many people first hear from it by text or email, not by letter. That is legal, but it makes the first step different: check the message really came from Unifin, then move the conversation onto paper.

The check is free and tells you if a letter is not worth it. If it is, the letter and three follow-ups cost $29 ($19 for military, veterans, seniors and people with disabilities).

Is that text really from Unifin?

Unifin publishes a list of the phone numbers it sends text messages from, so you can check a text against it. Compare the number that texted you with that list on Unifin's own website, not with a number given in the text. Do not click a payment link until you have checked.

Unifin's consumer portal is called uOffer. If you want to see the account, type the web address yourself rather than following a link, or call (888) 572-3987.

Phone numbers get reassigned, so a collection text can reach the wrong person. If the message is not meant for you, tell Unifin in writing that you are not the person named and ask it to stop contacting your number.

If Unifin has reported the account, our guide on how collections affect your credit covers the special rules for medical debt, and disputing a collection entry covers the rest.

Why it may not be on your credit report

Unifin says it does not furnish account information to any credit reporting agency. So a Unifin account may not appear on your report under Unifin's name at all. The original creditor may still report its own account, so check your reports for that creditor.

That does not make the debt go away. It does mean "pay now to protect your credit" is not a reason to pay Unifin before checking the debt. Ask for the validation information in writing first.

Answering a text with a written dispute

You do not have to reply to a text by text. A written dispute by mail, inside the validation period, obliges Unifin to stop collecting until it mails verification. You can also tell Unifin which channels not to use, for example "no texts" or "no calls".

Unifin's contact page sends disputes to an online form or to its P.O. box in Skokie. The form is quick, but a certified letter gives you proof of the date, which matters if the deadline is close.

Thinking about paying Unifin? Read whether you should pay a collection agency first, because paying an old or unverified debt can backfire.

A worked example over Labor Day

Say Unifin emails a validation notice on Wednesday, September 1, 2027 about a $388.15 credit card balance it is collecting for a bank.

  1. Labor Day (September 6) does not count, so the fifth working day after sending is Thursday, September 9, 2027.
  2. The dispute period can end no earlier than Saturday, October 9, 2027, a Saturday.
  3. Check the sender against Unifin's published list, then mail your dispute by certified mail, naming the bank as the current creditor.
  4. In the same letter, ask Unifin to stop texting and write instead.
