TrueAccord emailed you. Check it, then answer in writing
TrueAccord Corp. (sometimes written True Accord) is a debt collector that works mostly by email and text rather than phone. TrueAccord says it is a licensed third-party collection agency that collects for clients and does not buy debts. Because the first contact is often an email, the first job is to check it is genuine, and the second is to move anything important onto paper.
The check is free and tells you plainly if writing will not help. If it will, the letter and three follow-ups cost $29 ($19 for military, veterans, seniors and people with disabilities).

TrueAccord accepts disputes by email, phone or mail. A letter by certified mail gives you the strongest proof of the date.
Is that email really from TrueAccord?
TrueAccord tells people to check that an email really comes from an address ending in trueaccord.com. TrueAccord account numbers appear in its emails and letters in the format 47-XXXX-XXXX. If the sender address or the account number looks different, do not click the payment link.
Rather than following a link, type TrueAccord's site address yourself, or call (888) 316-5474 (TTY 711). A real collector has to give you validation information, which for TrueAccord often arrives by email.
In a 2024 Florida case, a court ruled for TrueAccord on a claim about a collection email delivered late in the evening, because it was sent within presumed-convenient hours and first opened the next day. Email is a normal way for collectors to reach people now, so check your spam folder for the validation notice and its dispute date.
The quickest way to make TrueAccord prove the debt is a debt validation letter sent inside the dispute window.
Why a written dispute beats the portal button
TrueAccord's portal and emails make it easy to pay, set up a plan or click "dispute". A written dispute by certified mail inside the validation period does something the button may not prove as clearly: it gives you a dated record that TrueAccord received your dispute, which obliges it to stop collecting until it sends verification.
You can also choose how TrueAccord contacts you. If you want no more texts, or no more emails to a work address, say so in writing.
TrueAccord describes itself as a full-service, digital-first debt collection agency, and TrueAccord collects for clients, so the creditor named in the email still owns the debt. Our form puts that creditor in the "current owner" field.
If TrueAccord has added the account to your credit report, our guide to removing collections from your credit report explains when an entry can be disputed. And if it is the calls that are the problem, you can tell a debt collector to stop contacting you in writing.
High-interest online loans: the Colorado settlement
Colorado found that from 2017 to 2022 TrueAccord collected or tried to collect from about 29,000 consumers on loans from tribal lending entities, telling them they owed the full balance on loans whose rates broke state law. TrueAccord agreed to pay $500,000 for consumers and was barred from collecting any debt where the original loan's APR exceeded Colorado's limits.
If TrueAccord is collecting an online loan with a very high interest rate, check whether the lender was licensed in your state and whether the rate was legal there. Your state's financial regulator or attorney general can tell you. That question can matter more than the balance.
Connecticut's Department of Banking entered a consent order with TrueAccord in 2022 under its consumer credit laws. TrueAccord consented without formal proceedings.
Old ERC accounts
TrueAccord's owner bought the collection business of Enhanced Recovery Company in 2022, so some old ERC phone, cable and utility accounts now come to people from TrueAccord. See our Enhanced Recovery Company page for what happened to ERC.
If an account is old, check your state's time limit before paying. A small "settlement" payment can restart the clock in some states.
A worked example: an email notice in January
Suppose TrueAccord emails a validation notice on Friday, January 15, 2027 about a $940.99 online loan balance.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18) does not count, so the fifth working day after sending is Monday, January 25, 2027.
- The dispute period can end no earlier than Wednesday, February 24, 2027. The email itself should state the date.
- Check the sender address ends in trueaccord.com before opening any link.
- Mail the dispute by certified mail, naming the lender as the current creditor and asking TrueAccord to stop texting.
For the rules that apply where this example is set, see debt collection law in Colorado.
Sample letter to TrueAccord
This is for someone in Colorado who has had TrueAccord emails about an online loan balance they think is too high, but no paper letter. It asks for the validation information in writing, disputes the debt and the amount, and names the lender.
It also tells TrueAccord which channels not to use. Details are made up.
Questions people ask about TrueAccord
Is TrueAccord a scam?
No. TrueAccord Corp. is a licensed collection agency, NMLS ID 1374720 in Nevada. Fake emails do imitate collectors, so check the sender address and the account number format.
Why is TrueAccord emailing instead of calling?
TrueAccord describes itself as digital-first. Email and text are legal ways for collectors to contact you, and you can ask it to stop using a particular channel.
Did TrueAccord buy my debt?
No. TrueAccord says it collects for clients and does not buy debts. The email or letter must name the creditor.
Is TrueAccord the same as ERC?
No, but they share an owner. TrueML owns TrueAccord and bought ERC's collection business in 2022.
Can I dispute by clicking a button in the email?
You can, and TrueAccord says it pauses collection after a dispute. A certified letter is still the strongest proof of the date your dispute arrived.
Are you connected to TrueAccord?
No. We are an independent document tool and name TrueAccord only to describe who contacted you.
