"Capital Management" is not always CMS
CMS has warned on its own website that more than a few companies include the words "Capital Management" in their names, and that it is Capital Management Services, LP, located in Buffalo, New York. Some of those other companies are collectors too, and some callers use the name loosely.
Its website states that the phone number (352) 443-5859 is not affiliated with Capital Management Services. If you are unsure who called, ask for the written validation notice: it must give the collector's full name and the address where it accepts disputes. Then compare those details with the ones published on CMS's own websites, cms-collect.com and cms-trans.com. Our free scam checker does that comparison for a message you paste.
Who CMS collects for
CMS works for clients in the financial industry, so the account is most likely a credit card or another loan that the original lender has passed to CMS to collect. The validation notice must name the creditor you owe now, and if that differs from the original creditor you can ask CMS for the original creditor's name and address.
Disputing by email or mail
CMS asks people to use its compliance email address to tell it about disputes or to request the name and address of the original creditor. CMS says requests for account information or updates must be made in writing to its mail processing division in Buffalo. Its compliance department can be reached at 1-800-519-2687, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern.
An email dispute is in writing, and a written dispute inside the validation period makes CMS stop collecting until it mails verification. Save a copy of the email and any reply. If the deadline is close, a certified letter to the Buffalo address gives you the clearest proof of when it arrived.

If CMS keeps calling
You can tell CMS how and when it may contact you, including not to call you at work. Put it in writing to the compliance address, and keep a record of any calls that follow.
If CMS has reported the account, our guide on how collections affect your credit covers the special rules for medical debt, and disputing a collection entry covers the rest.
A worked example over Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Say CMS mails a notice on Wednesday, January 13, 2027 about a $3,206.44 credit card balance.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18) and the weekend do not count, so the fifth working day after mailing is Thursday, January 21, 2027.
- The dispute period can end no earlier than Saturday, February 20, 2027.
- Email the dispute to the compliance address and mail a copy by certified mail, naming the card issuer as the creditor.
For the rules that apply where this example is set, see debt collection law in New York.
