Aldous & Associates: a gym, an apartment or another bill?

Aldous & Associates calls itself "a law firm that specializes in past due consumer collections", based in Holladay, Utah. It says it was founded to collect for the gym industry, has been in business for going on 15 years, and now also serves apartments, pest control companies and consumer finance. So an Aldous letter is usually about a gym membership, an apartment you moved out of, or a service you stopped, and the contract and your cancellation records matter most.

The free check is the first step and says honestly when a letter will not help. If it will, the letter and three follow-ups cost $39 ($29 for military, veterans, seniors and people with disabilities).

A law firm letter is not a lawsuit

Because Aldous is a law firm, its letters can look more serious than an ordinary collection notice. A letter is not a court case: a lawsuit starts with a summons from a court, which you can check with that court yourself. In 2019 a federal appeals court upheld the dismissal of a suit claiming an Aldous letter about a Diamond Wireless account falsely suggested a lawsuit; the court found the letter "does not threaten legal action".

A law firm collecting consumer debts is still a debt collector under federal law, so the same rules apply: a validation notice with the creditor and an itemized balance, and the right to dispute in writing.

Gym memberships and cancelled contracts

For a gym, the questions are when and how you cancelled, what the contract says about notice and fees, and whether the gym kept charging after you left. Gather the contract, any cancellation email or letter, and bank statements showing the last charge.

Look closely at fees added on top of unpaid dues. Federal law bars a collector from collecting any amount, including fees, unless the agreement creating the debt or the law allows it. A suit filed in New Jersey in June 2026 alleges that an Aldous letter for a fitness studio sought $2,039.85, including fees the plaintiffs say were not allowed; these are allegations and the case is pending. If the balance includes fees you never agreed to, say so in your dispute and ask for the contract.

Apartment and other accounts

Aldous has a separate line, 615-600-4988, for apartment accounts. For a move-out balance, ask for the lease, the move-out inspection, an itemized list of charges and how your security deposit was applied. Many states have their own rules on deposit itemization.

Contacting Aldous and paying

Its contact page says communications sent by email "will not be processed and reviewed", so put disputes in writing and mail them to P.O. Box 171374, Holladay, UT 84117-1374, ideally by certified mail. The collections line is 385-388-8005. Its "Make a Payment" link goes to a PayRazr (BillingTree) payment portal. It says it contacts consumers by email and text message and offers an online portal, payment plans and settlements its clients approve.

A written dispute inside the validation period makes Aldous stop collecting until it mails verification. You may also ask it to contact you only by mail.

Thinking about paying Aldous? Read whether you should pay a collection agency first, because paying an old or unverified debt can backfire.

The quickest way to make Aldous prove the debt is a debt validation letter sent inside the dispute window.

Licensing and complaints

  • 2018 Connecticut consent order. Connecticut found Aldous collected in the state after its collection agency license expired on January 1, 2017, and it paid a $5,000 civil penalty under a May 2018 consent order

Nebraska's February 2026 roster lists it as a licensed collection agency, license number 1792. On October 11, 2026 the CFPB's complaint database listed 6,280 complaints naming Aldous & Associates since 2013; the most common issue was an attempt to collect a debt the person said they did not owe. Complaints are consumers' own accounts and are not verified by the CFPB.

A worked example in January

Say Aldous mails a notice on Wednesday, January 20, 2027 for $684.00 of gym dues and fees, for a membership you cancelled in writing.

  1. Counting five working days, the assumed receipt date is Wednesday, January 27, 2027.
  2. The validation period runs until at least Friday, February 26, 2027.
  3. Mail a dispute to the P.O. box before then, include a copy of your cancellation, and ask for the contract and an itemized list of dues and fees.
