Our full Midland guide explains who Midland is, why it bought your account, and what to put in a dispute.

Before you call Midland

Have the letter in front of you and note the reference number, the amount and the name of the creditor it shows. Then keep the call short:

  • Ask, don't agree. Ask who the creditor is, what the balance is made of and where to send a dispute. You do not have to confirm the debt is yours, agree to pay or give card or bank details on the call.
  • Ask for it in writing. A collector must send you a validation notice with the amount, the creditor and the date by which you can dispute.[9] If you have not had one, ask for it to be mailed.
  • Write down the call. Date, time, the name of the person and what was said.

A dispute is strongest in writing, sent before the deadline on the notice. Our free deadline calculator works out that date.

How often Midland can call

A collector is presumed to break the law if it calls you about a debt more than seven times in seven days, or within seven days after a phone conversation with you about that debt.[10][11] It must not call before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. your time, and if another time or place, such as work, is inconvenient, you can say so.[12][13]

You can also tell Midland to stop calling and contact you only by mail. Put it in writing and keep a copy.[13]

If a number is not on this list

Scammers copy real collectors' names and can make any number appear on caller ID.[14] If a caller pressures you to pay today, threatens arrest, or asks for a gift card, wire transfer or crypto payment, hang up.[14][15]

Call Midland back on a number from this page, taken from its own website, and ask whether the account is real. Our free scam checker compares a voicemail or text with the numbers and web addresses collectors publish.
